Big, sloppy thanks Kilgore Books and the dozens (and dozens) of folks who braved the dark recesses of the MSCD Tivoli to see many of Colorado's finest cartoonists (and myself) last Saturday. It was a good time. If you didn't come, you missed me getting completely high and staring off into space for six or seven hours. You also missed Xeric Award winning cartoonist Sam Spina delivering a big bowl of grief to my lovely wife for her saucy pinup (featuring Feminazi receiving felatio from Sequential Sally) from the newest issue of the SMFHS. Fortunately for you, The Denver Post did not miss this event. It was captured on camera and put in their internet coverage of the event. For me, Jason's approach to storytelling was an acquired taste. I didn't quite know what to make of his minimalistic art, slow paced story lines, or hijacking of established characters (or actual people transformed into characters, for that matter). Yet throughout the years I keep coming back to his works, and every time I read another of his books I like them more. Low Moon is so far my favorite; a collection of short pieces, each intricate and engrossing. In particular, I'm finding myself enamored by each story's subtle surrealism. Each reality is so like our own, but with a few odd twists Jason rends the world into one seen only in dreams. On the surface these tales look simple, but once read one quickly discovers each story has a depth that knows no bottom.

A truly chilling autobiographical tale of a man's experience with a pedophile priest. The simplistic art may not be much to look at, but the harrowing tale of survival and sexual abuse is one that will haunt you for days after you've read it. A little on the pricey side, but well worth it.

In true McKean form, we're treated to an all-you-can-eat buffet of visuals borrowing from so many artistic disciplines that you could write a doctorate thesis about it. The book's expensive as fuck, but well worth it.

The Metabarons by Alejandro Jodorowsky & Juan Gimenez

Atlantis Comics hooked me up with a complete run of this series before closing up, and for that I'm forever in their debt. Never before have you encountered such ball-smashing weirdness, with a tightly woven plot so perfect it's only rivaled by the fantastically detailed artwork. I can't summarize what this four volume story's about. I don't have the words. This series is nothing short of a masterpiece from two fellas who are either super-geniuses or a super-psychopaths, and the fact that it's currently out of print is a travesty. If you see it, BUY IT. You'll thank me later.

Chester 5000 by Jess Fink

This prettiest little porno book you've ever done seen! Not much of a narrative, which is good, because who really likes adult books that make you follow too much of a plot, right? Just get to the fucking. Anyway ... this is a hot book. Missus V read it and was horny for three days. Fun read, beautiful art, reasonable price. Check it out. Make your significant other read it. You won't be sorry, unless your significant other is a big, lame prude. Then you'll be REALLY sorry.

Today marks the end of an era for myself, the great city of Lakehood, and for comic book lovers all across Colorado. After 17 years of business, Atlantis Comics will be closing its doors forever. I've been shopping at Atlantis since I was 13 years old. I rode my bike 6 miles to get there, and bought two Captain America comics (from the "Capwolf" storyline, if you can believe that shit).

I owe a great debt to Atlantis, and more importantly to Rod, the store's owner and founder. Rod not only carried a mammoth selection of small press books (mine included), but he recommended many influential titles to me that, in any other setting, I wouldn't have given a second glance. If not for Rod, I'm not even certain I'd even be READING comics today, let alone making them myself.

So from the bottom of my heavy heart, thank you Rod and Atlantis Comics for everything you've done for good ol' Mister V. Colorado, the comic book industry, and everyone involved in said industry has lost a major ally.

WILSON by Daniel Clowes

I read GHOSTWORLD when I was a teenager, and was like, "What the fuck am I reading? Christ does Dan Clowes suck." I read WILSON some 15 years later, and was like "This is so depressing it's hilarious. Jesus I was a dumb teenager." Good stuff. Expensive, but worth it.
